Firm Overview

Albert“Agbado” a name by which the late Albert Gillies Heward-Mills Barrister-at-Law  founder of our Law Firm came to be known by on his return from the UK as a Barrister at Law (Middle Temple) to the then Gold Coast in the early 1920s consequent on his rapidly built reputation as a distinguished Legal Practitioner in the Colonial pre Independence era in the then Gold Coast.

Albert Gillies Heward-Mills went on to Cambridge after attending Queens College in the exclusive English Public School System in Taunton Somerset  before the 1st World War, beginning a family tradition for education there. The present Head of Chambers Rodney Heward-Mills following in this tradition with several other members of the Heward-Mills family, a number  of whom are also lawyers by profession, including our United Kingdom Associate Mr. Reginald Arkhurst grandson of the late A.G. Heward-Mills a Barrister–at-Law (Middle Temple) with  Chambers in Kings Bench Walk London England. Agbado Chambers today has the singular distinction of being the oldest existing law firm in Ghana indeed even the area of its original location in James Town Accra is today known as “Agbado” in recognition of its distinguished founder.

The law firm today Heward-Mills & Associates – Agbado Chambers has taken up the mantle of the late A.G. Heward-Mills, who died in 1963, for the firm to be then headed by his son Nathaniel Neelanquaye Heward-Mills Barrister-at–Law (Middle Temple) until his demise in 1994. These two stalwart predecessors of the firm established and continued a proud tradition in the Law for which Agbado Chambers earned a reputation for high quality legal practice and advocacy which the firm today endeavours to carry on.
                                                                                          
Joseph Neelante Heward-Mills Barrister–at–Law (Middle Temple) father of Rodney Heward-Mills similarly with his father A.G Heward-Mills studied law in the U.K (Durham University) being called to the English Bar in 1952 He practiced law at the Ghana Bar from 1953 although under another Heward-Mills family law firm with the name Dantu Chambers. He conducted in the tradition of his father a prominent successful practice with a similar reputation for high quality legal practice and advocacy  specializing in the latter years of his practice, until  his early death in 1973, in Foreign Investment Consultancy, Business and Corporate Law Practice.

Albert Gillies Heward-Mills, Joseph Neelante Heward-Mills and Nathaniel Neelanquaye Heward-Mills all shared a passion not only for the law but for horseracing as well, each of them keeping large stables during their practice. This is paid tribute to in our firms logo.

The firm today headed by Rodney Heward-Mills  draws inspiration from its Heward-Mills family predecessors and conducts a varied practice including the Criminal Practice tradition but specializing much more now in Civil Law particularly Business Law and International Trade, Corporate and Investment Practice, and Consultancy, Trade Marks & Patents, Copyright & Intellectual Property (Music), Real Estate Practice and Property Management, Building & Construction, Conveyancing and Landlord and Tenant, Debt Recovery, Family, Estate, Insurance, Taxation Aviation Law Civil and Criminal Litigation, Immigration Human Rights Law, White Collar Crime Extradition and Commercial Litigation.

Our team  includes Kwame Owusu Yelbert a Legal Practitioner with 10 years experience in the Aviation Industry. After he took his degree in Social Studies with a Diploma in Economics at the University of Cape Coast Kwame joined Ghana Civil Aviation Authority in 1997 with Aviation Security in charge of Criminal Investigations. In 2002 he headed the Kumasi Airport Security and from 2003 whilst there also studied law qualifying as a Barrister in 2009. He has now joined us at Agbado Chambers and brings hands on experience in Aviation law and Practice to the firm.

Kweku Attobrah our Tax Consultant also whilst rising through the ranks of the Internal Revenue Service took a sabbatical to study Law thereafter gaining promotion to the rank of Chief Inspector of Taxes. Kweku endeavours to enhance our Investment Consultancy Services and also adds expertise to our Conveyancing and Landlord & Tenant practice.

With Reginald Arkhurst our UK Consultant and Immigration Law and  International Commercial Arbitration Specialist adding a further dimension to Agbado Chambers international frontier we believe we are well placed to offer dedicated quality service to all our clients.
